— Even though Oglebay's Winter Festival of Lights is over, there is plenty more to enjoy from skiing to snowboarding and a new winter activity.

Marked by their blue square sign, blue runs are a notch up from the beginner-friendly green circles, and only one step away from the black diamond runs. These intermediate runs are often a bit steeper and narrower than green runs.

While there are no hard and fast rules that ski areas follow, in North America, ski trails are rated as green (easiest), blue (intermediate), and black diamond (advanced). And most ski areas also offer even more advanced terrain for experts, marked with a double black diamond or E and X for extreme terrain.

The steepness of ski trails is usually measured by grade (as a percentage) instead of degree angle. In general, beginner slopes (green circle) are between 6% and 25%. Intermediate slopes (blue square) are between 25% and 40%. Difficult slopes (black diamond) are 40% and up.

Black diamond ski runs are designated for advanced skiers who are looking for a challenge beyond the intermediate blue square runs. These runs are known for their steepness, generally having a slope inclination of 40% to 60%, meaning there's a 400-600 foot drop in vertical elevation for every 1,000 feet of slope.

You don’t want to wear jeans or jogging pants to go snow tubing, because while you may not come in heavy contact with snow, you’ll want to stay dry as long as possible. Snow pants let you wear layers underneath for extra warmth and have an exterior fabric that repels moisture.
